*John is a student in my class that has struggled through the year. I started to notice early on that he didn't pay attention to me, and that he would always be moving around. Mrs. Loftis let me know that he shows the signs of ADHD, but his parents had never took him to the doctor to see if they could find out a solution.
John started showing up to school with different injuries every day, and this started to concern us. Mrs. Loftis started taking pictures of the bruises on his back and legs to document this. John came to school multiple times with his glasses broken, and one time with a cut on his face where they would be. In the middle of class one day, John randomly told me that he had been attacked by a dog. I looked at where he got bit, and reported it to the nurse. The parents hadn't tried to find out if the dog had rabies or took him to the doctor.Another day, John came in with his arm wrapped up. The first day, he said that he had falled on of his dad's lawn mower. The second day, he told me that his dad had accidentally spilled gasoline on his arm at a campfire. After this incident, Mrs. Loftis reported John's situation to DSS. We didn't hear anything back for weeks.
John came back and told me that over the weekend his uncle had taught him how to pick a lock. I was trying to teach him what he had missed in math while he was gone, but he wanted to keep telling me about what all he and his uncle had done over the weekend. John is very frustrating to work with, just because of the ADHD and everything going on at home. He is such a sweet kid and always wants a hug from me. He just needs to work on his attention span, or he will have trouble in the future.
A few days ago, I found out that John had told the substitute that his dad was in jail for beating up his mom, and kicking his dog. This kid obviously goes through too much and I wish that he could get out of the home, so he can have a better life than what he has now.
During his EOGs, his ADHD was acting up very much. He apparently finished in 30 minutes and used the rest of the time to move around and make as much noise as possible. I am unaware of his EOG scores but I doubt he did very well. He had to complete most of the test without his glasses, because he “lost” them, and no family was at his house to bring him any extras.
In the future, all of this could hinder John in his education, social life, etc. His ADHD could become worse and his trouble to stay focused could become a bigger obstacle. Studies show that many kids that are abused turn out to be abusive in the future. I hate this for him because he is so sweet and he wouldn’t hurt anyone, but if he continues to see this, he will begin to think it is okay.

*John is not the real student's name.
